Abstract
One of the most striking characteristics of the 1950s is the predominance of the middle class. They are "people of plenty," as one author calls them, a consumer culture, and their numbers include people whose families had been on the fringes of poverty not too many years earlier. What are the engines of this consumer revolution? Housing in the greatly expanded suburban world; automobiles which are produced in massive numbers, and television which brings visions of this consumer world into the home. Temporary fads and crazes also sweep the nation.
