Abstract
The 1950s are not as calm and contented as the politics and popular culture of the era suggest. After decades of strained relations, an open battle against racial segregation begins. A series of suits challenge the constitutionality of paying black teachers less than white teachers with comparable educational credentials. There are also challenges to segregation in higher education, such as the case involving the University of Texas Law School which Texas lost in a Supreme Court ruling. From Plessy v. Ferguson forward a history of court decisions chip away at segregation in the United States. The NAACP plans a major assault on segregation in schools, using Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka as the lead case.
