Abstract
The black community begins to challenge the constraints segregation imposes. A new mass-based political movement begins to coalesce among black members of urban southern churches. Martin Luther King emerges as chief spokesman and black women as the foot soldiers of this new civil rights movement. King is a minister who can articulate black demands in a way that is palatable to whites. He gains a national stage because of the Supreme Court's involvement in civil rights. Rosa Parks' arrest in 1955 for refusing to move to the back of the bus to sit begins a prolonged boycott of Montgomery city buses by the black community. Large-scale civil disobedience begins in winter of 1960-61 with lunch counter sit-ins.
