Abstract
Eisenhower is one of the most popular and least experienced presidents of the 20th century. His cabinet is dominated by leaders from the world of business who want, like their president, to return America to its private enterprise roots. Eisenhower pursues a moderate domestic policy, resisting conservative pressure to dismantle the New Deal welfare policies that remain. By the late 1950s these social programs are viewed as entitlements not emergency relief measures. The largest federal aid program during the Eisenhower years is the interstate highway system. Large expenditures are invested in K-12 education by the Eisenhower administration.
