Abstract
By the late 1950s a growing restlessness lurks beneath the surface of American society. Anxiety about America's position in the world, growing pressure from African Americans and other minorities, and the increasing visibility of poverty are beginning to shake the nation's confidence. The new decade begins with a tightly contested presidential race between Richard M. Nixon and John F. Kennedy. Lyndon B. Johnson, Kennedy's running mate, is a clear asset. The Kennedy-Johnson ticket wins by 120,000 votes in one of the most hotly contested campaigns in history.
