Abstract
During the 1960 presidential campaign, John F. Kennedy promises to end segregation with stroke of a pen. His inaction once he is elected fuels the disillusionment of African Americans. Their attempt to desegregate Birmingham turns out masses of protestors. Birmingham Sheriff Bull Conner seems to be handling situation but then Martin Luther King decides to use high school students as demonstrators. A series of desegregation efforts like this force the administration to open up public accommodations and integrate interstate travel and publically-supported universities. President Johnson applies public and private pressure on the Senate to pass the Civil Rights bill stalled by the Southern filibuster.
