Abstract
The enduring images of the 1960s depict problems that have no easy solutions, at home or abroad. The Kennedy administration attempts to win the hearts and minds of less developed countries by initiating the Peace Corps, and yet most third-world nations believe the United States is helping only because of its national security interests. That is the impetus for U.S. support of the Bay of Pigs invasion and its grim aftermath. When President Kennedy meets with Nikita Khrushchev in Vienna, Khrushchev tells Kennedy he is going to sign peace treaty with East Germany.
