Abstract
Late in 1964, the situation in Vietnam appears to be getting worse despite the investment of American forces and the bombing of coastal positions in North Vietnam (Gulf of Tonkin). In 1965, Johnson makes a series of executive decisions, endorsed by Congress, that make the Vietnam war an American war despite many unanswered questions. Pressured by comrades in South, the Communists in the North send infantry troops into South Vietnam, electing to pursue both diplomatic and military courses at same time. In March of 1965 Johnson administration deploys ground troops to protect air bases, but soon defensive forces become offensive.
