Abstract
The Vietnam war and racial struggles at home creates a wedge between the American people and their government. In retrospect journalists like Marvin Kalb feel they were systematically lied to by the U.S. government, and as a result unknowingly misled the American people. President Johnson, under siege, feels surrounded by enemies. For the first time the foreign policy of the United States does not seem to be living up to its twin pillars of stopping aggression and supporting democracy. Disillusionment spills over into the streets. The war has economic consequences as well.
