Abstract
In 1968 demonstrations and violent reactions occur within and without the Democratic convention in Chicago. Ultimately, the 1968 presidential election is a contest between the current and former vice president, Hubert Humphrey and Richard Nixon. Nixon says he will bring the divided country together and achieve peace with honor. In reality Nixon's campaign is trying to undermine peace negotiations behind the scenes. If Johnson had revealed Nixon's duplicity Humphrey would have probably won, but by this point Johnson feels so betrayed by the American people that he doesn't care. Nixon's victory is as narrow as his defeat in 1960. The majority of electorate is more interested in restoring stability than promoting social change.
