Abstract
Native Americans did not achieve citizenship en masse until 1924 with the Indian Citizenship Act. The federal government attempts to force Native Americans into mainstream American life resulting in unemployment and Indians living in ghettos separated from their families, language, and culture. Mimicking the Civil Rights movement a group of Native Americans occupy Alcatraz Island to bring attention to their plight. Even more deadly is the confrontation with the FBI at Wounded Knee after the Ogata Sioux proclaim their independence.
