Abstract
The North Vietnamese launch a full-scale offensive against the South in March of 1975. Thieu appeals to Washington for assistance. As the North Vietnamese offensive gathers momentum in March and April of 1975, Ford breaks with Kissinger and announces that the war in Vietnam is over. Refugees trying to escape South Vietnam literally grab at U.S. helicopters and boats as they leave, trying to escape. The defeat in Vietnam leads to a widespread belief that America's leadership is threatened.
