Abstract
Professor of history Gary Gerstle talks about the mood of the United States following World Wars I and II. In both instances, there was what Professor Gerstle calls an "...ideological intensity expressing itself in demands for patriotism (and) loyalty. A lot of people are mobilized, either formally or informally, to enforce conformity (and) celebrate America. Feelings get riled up and people get mobilized. And those feelings, once unleashed, can be difficult to turn off."
