Abstract
Historian and author Bernard Bailyn talks about why the British were not successful in overcoming American resistance in the early part of the Revolutionary War. He credits George Washington for his military leadership and also acknowledges the important role France played when it entered the war in 1778. But, more than anything else, Professor Bailyn attributes Britain's military failure to the inability of the British government to recognize that they was facing something much more formidable than a rag-tag collection of malcontents.
