Abstract
Historian and author Bernard Bailyn analyzes the abilities of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, who served as the third and fourth U.S. presidents respectively. Professor Bailyn explains that Jefferson was a good administrator and an excellent politician who was loved by some and loathed by others. Professor Bailyn notes that while James Madison was not especially skilled as an administrator, he was an intellectual giant who had a great capacity to understand the implications and intricacies of the key issues of the day.
