Abstract
Professor of American studies and history Matthew Frye Jacobson talks about violence carried out against immigrants, as well as a curious duality in the way European immigrants were viewed in the early twentieth century. Professor Jacobson explains that such immigrants were legally white and had the rights and privileges that went with that designation. But, at the same time, their whiteness was highly contested and seen in different ways by different people.
