Abstract
Historian Peter Onuf talks about the high points as well as the shortcomings of the John Adams presidency. On the downside, President Adams had to contend with an extremely disloyal Cabinet, consisting largely of holdovers from the second Washington Administration. But even with this handicap, the Adams presidency did manage one important success. "Adams' great achievement," Professor Onuf explains, "was to find a way to extricate the United States from a diplomatic and military crisis in a war with France that would have been a disaster."
