Abstract
J.M.E. McTaggart considered time unreal. "Past, present, and future," he said," are incompatible determinations.... No event can be more than one." Does the present enjoy privileged status in terms of its reality, or is it a subjective illusion of human consciousness? There are two basic views about what time is, says Quentin Smith. One is called a relational view in which all the events going on now make up time. Then there is the concept that time is an entity in its own right that we are just occupying.
