Abstract
As Gerald Ford is thrust into the presidency, America is a troubled nation, numbed by the Watergate scandal, the fall of Vietnam, and the nation's economic difficulties. Ford's increasing skill in foreign affairs results in his distancing himself from Henry Kissinger, announcing the end of U.S. involvement in Vietnam and continuing the policy of détente unpopular with conservative Republicans. Ford is challenged by Ronald Reagan in 1976 and barely secures the Republican nomination. Democratic candidate, former Georgia governor Jimmy Carter, has an overwhelming lead in the polls as the campaign begins, but only narrowly wins the election.
