Abstract
Lois Gibbs thought she had a sickly child until she learned that twenty thousand tons of chemical waste was buried just blocks from her home. When she learned that the area had a 56 percent rate of birth defects, Gibbs began to take action. Ultimately, all 900 families had the opportunity to sell their houses at fair market value and move from the Love Canal community; a victory of ordinary citizens against government and corporate forces.
