Abstract
Propelled by the Cold War, research and testing of rocket motors and fuels flourished in the mid 1900s, exposing workers to the acute effects of toxic chemicals and the as yet unknown chronic and long term effects. Around the same time, experiments with nuclear power exposed workers to the devastating health effects of radioactive materials. As with the chemical exposures, the impact of exposure to radioactive materials was not fully understood and what was then considered a permissible amount of exposure is now known to be anything but safe. Today, the international scientific community believes there is no safe dose of radiation.
