Abstract
Unlike municipal landfills, hazardous waste landfills have very specific acceptance procedures. Chemical sampling and analysis of an incoming load must match the waste profile sent by the generator prior to a truck being allowed into the secure landfill. Records are kept so that any given load can be traced and recovered. Each load is compacted into place and a six inch layer of soil covers all exposed waste at the end of each day. Special procedures are followed for containerized wastes, heavy metals, liquid wastes from electroplating, and ash from tire turning operations. Once it is full, a landfill is capped and monitored for thirty years.
