Abstract
Fifty percent of people with bipolar disorder attempt suicide at some point in their lives; 20% complete the act. Kay Redfield Jamison talks about her own struggle with bipolar disorder and the sense of helplessness and pain that result. The period of greatest danger for suicide appears to be when someone is emerging from the depths of depression. Dr. Jamison responds with passion to the charge that suicide is a selfish act. How therapy can help families who have lost someone to suicide.
