Abstract
This is part one of a history of the cultural evolution of man, from primitive times to the present, presented by the late Dr. Jacob Bronowski. This program follows the development of man's unique gift of foresight and imagination. It traces the changes in his anatomy and physiology that resulted in upright walking, stereoscopic vision and the precision handgrasp, which enabled him to design and manufacture tools. Included is a visit to the Omo valley in Ethiopia, where the first remains of man and his predecessors are being found, and to northern Norway, where the Lapps are modern equivalents of the first society to use animals to its own ends. New computer techniques illustrate humanity's evolution, while x-ray and slow motion photography of an Olympic athlete in action show the complex interweaving of mind and body.
