Abstract
This is part four of the history of the cultural evolution of man, from primitive times to the present, presented by the late Dr. Jacob Bronowski. This program deals with the beginnings of chemistry as it developed from the ancient metallurgy of China and Japan, as well as from the mystical searchings of the alchemists. It discusses how the cutting tool of fire came to be seen as a transforming force rather than a destructive one, and the film includes a sequence showing the ritual accompanying the making of a samurai sword. It explains how, over the centuries, a theory of elements emerged and how this finally became the basis of modern atomic theory.
