Abstract
This is part six of a history of the cultural evolution of man, from primitive times to the present, presented by the late Dr. Jacob Bronowski. This program focuses on man's early attempts to map the forces which move the planets, contrasting the static nature of South American astronomy with the new ideas that were emerging in Europe. These new concepts heralded the beginning of the scientific revolution and the resulting clash between scientific progress and religious dogma is symbolized by the trial of Galileo. For this, the television team received permission to film in the secret archives of the Vatican and in the chamber where the actual trial took place.
