Abstract
This is part ten of a history of the cultural evolution of man, from primitive times to the present, presented by the late Dr. Jacob Bronowski. This program explores the world inside the atom and discusses the men and ideas that made physics in the twentieth century the greatest achievement of the human imagination. Beginning with the work of Mendeleyev and his periodic classification of the elements, it explains the contributions of men like Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr, Chadwick and Fermi, who were responsible for formulating modern atomic theory. Finally it pays tribute to Ludwig Boltzmann, to whom we owe the fact that the atom is as real to us now as our own world.
