Abstract
This is part eleven of a history of the cultural evolution of man, from primitive times to the present, presented by the late Dr. Jacob Bronowski. Here he discusses the moral dilemma of the scientist in our time: his responsibility as it pertains to the use to which his knowledge is put. Bronowski says that twentieth century physics began at the University of Gottingen, but points out that here there are also reminders of the beginnings of Nazism. He discusses the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and this leads him to Auschwitz, where some four million people were put to death and where he makes a plea for the rejection of the quest for absolute knowledge.
