Abstract
For centuries, the Church dominated Western thought and expression—but no hierarchy lasts forever. This program focuses on the Italian Renaissance and the flowering of humanist and secular art forms in Europe. Highlighting the intellectual and creative awakening inspired by the rediscovery of Greco-Roman culture in the 15th century, the film guides viewers through the rise of the Italian city-states, the patronage of the Medicis, the papal restoration of Rome, and the emergence of Flemish art and musical traditions. Ghiberti’s gilded panels, Brunelleschi’s cathedral dome, Botticelli’s La Primavera, Michelangelo’s David, and other visual milestones are studied alongside the achievements of composers Guillaume Dufay, Gilles Binchois, and Josquin des Prez.
