Abstract
Painting and sculpture dominate most discussions of the Renaissance—but European artistic advances would never have occurred without an infusion of mathematical knowledge. This program explores the numerical and geometrical investigations on which the Italian Renaissance was founded. Outlining the Arab world’s scientific influence on medieval Europe, the film addresses the development of linear perspective as well as many ideas related to numerical sequencing. Viewers will learn about Brunelleschi’s vanishing-point experiment, Leonardo’s obsession with the Golden Ratio, the Fibonacci numbers, the link between math and mapmaking, and other subjects. A Discovery Channel Production.
