Abstract
A new kind of spirituality emerged in the art and music of the Romantic period. This program helps students understand the movement by analyzing numerous paintings, drawings, orchestral works, and compositions for piano. Against the historical backdrops of the Napoleonic Wars and Europe’s Industrial Revolution, the film highlights the Romantic impulse to reconnect with nature, follow passions, and confront inner turmoil. Specific works include Gericault’s Raft of the Medusa, Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People, Constable’s Haywain, and Goya’s Charge of the Mamelukes and The Third of May 1808, as well as Berlioz’ Symphonie Fantastique, Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture, Chopin’s Nocturne in E Flat and Mazurka in A Minor, and Schumann’s character pieces. A Discovery Channel Production.
