Abstract
What directions did art take after the triumph of the high Renaissance? This program studies the pictorial and musical idioms of the Baroque period, from the ongoing importance of Italian painters and sculptors to the creation of opera, the oratorio, and works for the organ. Outlining the cultural and political atmosphere of 17th-century Europe, the film familiarizes viewers with the establishment of Dutch artistic traditions, Germany’s creative climate following the Thirty Years’ War, and the milieu of the Mantuan court. Caravaggio’s The Calling of Saint Matthew and The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew, Bernini’s David, and several works by Rubens and Rembrandt are compared with Arcangelo Corelli’s concerto grosso compositions, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, and Handel’s Messiah.
