Abstract
Teleconference of short, successive discussions exploring race relations, civil rights, economic disparities and political developments in American sports. Professor David K. Wiggins, author of Glory Bound: Black Athletes in a White America, talks about the sociopolitical role of African American athletes during the Civil Rights era. A Q&A session with the audience follows. Topics include Jackie Robinson’s political persuasion, what it will take for African Americans to become professional sports managers, how to make media more responsive to the plight of African American athletes, and racial problems for African American athletes that might persist into the 21st century. A second speaking session comprises two 3-person panels of former accomplished athletes who provide personal recollections and analysis of their experience with race-based issues in American sports. The first panel includes Lucinda Williams Adams, gold medalist in the 1960 Olympics, Milt Campbell, gold medalist in the 1956 Olympics, and Alice Coachman, gold medalist in the 1948 Olympics. The second panel comprises William Paterson University Professor Sam Silas, who was an All-Pro defensive tackle on the Saint Louis Cardinals from 1965-1966, and Robert Scott, former Negro League pitcher for the New York Black Yankees.
