In this keynote address given at William Paterson University’s 3rd Annual Diversity Conference, Professor María Elena Torre - founding Director of the Public Science Project at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York - discusses her work and research on The Opportunity Gap Project and subsequent student research camps, which provided insight into understanding interrelated social inequities at integrated high schools in New Jersey and New York. Committed to participatory approaches that challenge traditional notions of expertise and bring radically diverse groups of people into “contact zones,” Professor Torre’s work in schools and prisons has asked how we can build a “we” in order to understand the production and disruption of injustice.
