Copyright vs. copyleft: the future of intellectual property in a democratic society
Abstract
Individual presentations by Professor James Heller of the College of William and Mary and Professor Robert Boynton of NYU.

Professor Heller gives a history and explanation of U.S. copyright law and issues related to it, including determining fair use, copyright holders’ rights, users’ rights, takedown of copyrighted material, DMCA and the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act, and licensing.

Professor Boynton discusses contemporary issues concerning intellectual property, including legislation, the public domain, and rising cultural awareness.

The two talks are followed by a panel discussion with William Paterson faculty covering current copyright and intellectual property issues and controversies, as well as their impact on education in the 21st century. Specific topics include whether copyright impedes or assists the progress of science and research, what copyright means in an online environment, and whether copyright still has a purpose.

In a later session, Professor Heller provides practical analysis of copyright law with respect to how it pertains to teaching and research. Topics include how technology has affected the educational use of copyrighted material, how faculty can legally post copies of articles in Blackboard, and whether copyright issues affect student media presentations, among other topics.
