Abstract
In Big Mama, a devoted grandmother struggles to raise her orphan grandson alone in southcentral Los Angeles. She deals with her own failing health, discrimination, and a bureaucratic and legal system that continually threatens to intervene and force them apart. This Academy Award winning documentary helps to shed light on the changing role of grandparents in society and the changing and diverse composition of the family.
