Abstract
Bystander intervention effect is defined: the greater the number of bystanders who witness an emergency, the less likely it is that any one of them will intervene to help. This documentary discusses research on this phenomenon, providing historical background, discussing classic psychological experiments, and examining the five-step helping process that is sometimes hindered by the bystander intervention effect. It examines the case of Kitty Genovese, shows how the case led to Latané and Darley’s extended research into the bystander effect, and reviews key experiments. The program features Betsy Sparrow of Columbia University.
