Education In The Digital Age: Minnows and Giants, Oh My!
Abstract
Like Janus or perhaps more like Voldemort growing from the head of Professor Quirrell, higher education has two faces. One face is more than 1000 years old and would be familiar to someone visiting from medieval Europe. The other face, like Voldemort’s is emergent, unformed, and even unsightly to those of us accustomed to our more traditional look. Whether your taste runs to Oxbridge or to Edupunks, we can all agree that higher education is transforming. In her 2001 classic, The Death of Distance, Frances Cairncross correctly forecast technology’s transformation of the telecom industry to giants and minnows. Will IT change higher education in the same way?
