Abstract
An ethnographic / ethnomusicological exploration of ritual, symbolism and devotion amongst the Shi'a religious minority community in Pakistan. Using no narration, the film follows two men, a devotional singer and a ritual organizer, through the ten days of the Ashura festival commemorating the martyrdom of the Imam Husayn, in a Punjabi Shiah community in Pakistan. Viewers get a rare glimpse of the various rituals and traditions associated with Ashura, including the controversial practice of zanjir-matam, or self-flagellation with chain-knives.
