Abstract
A growing number of universities are providing online distance learning courses to meet student demand. According to a recent survey conducted by the Sloan Consortium (Parry, 2010), colleges saw a 17 percent increases in online enrollment and more than 4.6 million college students took online courses in 2010. However, teachers often face the challenge to create an interactive class online with the absence of face to face interactions with students (Shea, Pickett & Li, 2005). To overcome the barrier, a number of different multimedia technologies such as audio/video lectures and virtual discussion room have been adopted. Recently, some studies (e.g. Bosch, 2009, Mason & Rennie, 2008) discuss the potential advantages of social networking technologies to enhance the interactions in online classes. For this case, Facebook was used to create online presence and also encourage class discussion. Facebook discussion group was created for summer online course and students actively participated in Facebook discussions by sharing the videos and articles related to course topics. The discussions were not only limited on course topics but sometimes students shared their personal news and current interesting issues with the group members which helped to build the community in the classroom.
