Abstract
This hybrid distance learning approach to teaching and enhancing reading, writing and critical thinking in Basic Skills students incorporates a variety of learning experiences using novels as the foundation of instruction online and F2F. It encourages active learning, cooperation, communicates high expectations and respects diverse talents and ways of learning. These activities are designed to support and encourage Basic Skills students (who do not receive college credit for this course, thereby often influencing student commitment) to actively participate in serious college-level work. Increasing numbers of these students are working one or more jobs, are raising families or taking care of loved loves, are returning to school for retraining or have health issues themselves. The hybrid course was developed after participation in the "Applying the Quality Matters Rubric" (APPQMR) Identify the critical elements of the QM project and rubric at Passaic County Community College; completion of three levels of The Online Professor Program at BCC; application of the rubric to the hybrid course and review by TOPP reviewers at Bergen Community College using the Quality Matters Applying the QM Workshop and Peer Reviewer Certification. The course is currently being reviewed by a Quality Matters Review Team. Moodle is the LMS used to deliver this distance learning approach to teaching and enhancing reading, writing and critical thinking in Basic Skills students. Weekly reading assignments, double-sided journal entries, reading logs, novel-related essays, novel-related research and discussion questions are some of the online and F2F activities, some of which are submitted electronically to Mywritinglab and Turnitin. The hybrid course began as a pilot project and has successfully grown to six courses offered by two experienced instructors on a Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday schedule each fall and spring semester.
