Abstract
Over the last two years or so, the college has increased its efforts to significantly increase its online course offerings. The Sidney Silverman Library serves a vital role in the success of the college. However, our efforts to provide library services and instruction to our distance learners have not measured up in comparison to the services that are available to our traditional learners. Most students at Bergen, including those enrolled in distance education courses are expected to conduct research in fulfilling their course work. However, research poses significantly more challenges to conduct in the digital age with its prolific information resources compared to previous times. Providing access to resources is no longer sufficient since many students lack the search skills necessary to access, locate, evaluate, and use the information effectively. The presenters will discuss the library's use of Adobe Connect to support the institution's strategic objective of offering online courses and address issues relating to the accessibility of our services to students off campus. The discussion will also include the unique benefits and challenges of synchronous teaching and learning online, and feedback received from instructors and students who have participated in the program.
