Abstract
Technology has never made it easier to create Source Books. This talk shows how. The Source Book is a primary tool for planning, introspection, and expression. My presentation is a method for students to become aware of the ideas they are using and self-aware of the milieu that they exist within by creating source books for their projects. The electronic source books (pdf) are made using software and student photography. The internet is used to do research for those books as well as collect reference information. Blog software such as Tumblr and Posterous are covered. A case is made for the Source Book as a primary practice in student life using contemporary tools that are readily available. Each of us carries around a vast panoply of ideas, experiences, quotes, movies, images, memories and on. Emerging artists will regularly refer to this resource when they talk about their work but rarely will they have a ready image of the reference or the quote. When they take the moment to collect the image, the quote, or the movie, ideas begin shift to a larger plane. The simple act of collecting identifying and curating these reference objects can be primary to any project of note.
