A Method to Online Course Design Madness: A Collaborative Approach
Abstract
Montclair State University (MSU) has been moving quickly in developing online degree programs and individual online courses. In order to ensure high-quality online education, a social interaction-embedded content development model and template have been developed which enable faculty and Instructional Designers to work collaboratively. The model and template will be implemented in all online programs and individual online courses to enhance online teaching and learning outcomes. This presentation will highlight how this has been applied to different courses. In a new online MA program in Educational Leadership, Dr. Joseph Oluwole and an Instructional Designer were teamed up to collaboratively develop the course components. His Advanced Seminar on Educational Issues (Ethics) course uses case studies and ample opportunities for small group work, so that students develop reflective thinking that accounts for ethics in decision making as school leaders. Kristin Curry's course, Professional Writing for Arts Managers, is in a new MA program in Arts Management. Also working with the collaborative course design approach and template, the course helps prepare students for rigorous research and writing assignments through an interactive framework. This provides students with firsthand experience in organizing and drafting narrative documents commonly used to communicate within arts organizations.
