Abstract
The use of portfolios for outcome assessment within courses and programmatic assessment and accreditation reviews is becoming more common. Many software programs can be used to help manage ePortfolios with some tied to course management systems or requiring additional costs to access and support. This project piloted Google Sites to handle the ePortfolios submission with undergraduates with little or no knowledge of Google Apps and the cloud to during fall 2012. After utilizing static web pages, Wikis, Mahara, an Offline file repository, and Blackboard's portfolio tool during previous semesters as alternatives to paper portfolio collection, Google Sites was found to be a free effective alternative. This new system is now being utilized in 12 sections of Technical writing courses as a larger pilot test to determine its viability as a permanent option. Google Sites is free and has excellent support making it an ideal solution for those seeking a free, effective, easy-to-use alternative to other ePortfilio systems. It also allows users more control and access long after exiting a university. It was found that students had abundant support materials from Google and a great deal of flexibility to create portfolios that were delivered required material and allowed creative expression.
