Abstract
This is the first part of a symposium covering the social and environmental impact of the mass flooding that occurred in Passaic County, NJ during 2011. This part includes an intro by William Paterson University President Kathleen Waldron, a short documentary on the impact of the recent Passaic County flooding, and a keynote address by scientist Jeffrey L. Hoffman on the geologic history and controls on flooding in the Passaic River basin. Part 2 of the symposium contains the first panel discussion addressing the practical matters involved in planning and responding to flood-related disasters, and part 3 concludes with the second panel discussion addressing long-term municipal and state planning and responses to flood-related disasters.
