More than 12,000 family and friends filled the Izod Center for the University's 189th Commencement ceremony on May 22, 2012. Maria Otero, the Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights, U.S. Department of State, gave the Commencement address and received an honorary doctor of laws degree. Other speakers included Nathan Giroux, valedictorian, who earned a bachelor of music degree, summa cum laude, and Laura Bermingham, who earned a master's degree in communication disorders. In addition, three faculty were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments: Maboud Ansari, professor of sociology, teaching; Edward Burns, professor of English, scholarship/creative expression; and Rochelle Goldberg Kaplan, professor of educational leadership and professional studies, service.
