Abstract
Gamification - applying techniques found in games to non-game situations - is a hot topic in education. This session will illustrate gamification elements relevant to educational situations, with a special focus on badges. Digital badges - tokens that appear as icons or logos on web pages, blogs, etc., - are one gamification technique with huge potential. They represent a different approach to credentials, one that focuses on specific learner accomplishments. They can be used in formal and informal learning situations, e-Portfolios, and more. Badges could represent an opportunity for educators to quantify the parts of a learning situation that make up an entire experience. But - do we really need gamification or badges in education? Explore the good, the bad, and the ugly in this interactive session where you will learn about gamification, digital badges, and some current infrastructures that support them.
