Abstract
In the 1980's, the issue of quality became so critical that an entire philosophy of management--known as total quality management, or "TQM,"--evolved. It was based on the notion that, ultimately, corporate success rests on quality. The impact of this philosophy was staggering, because it encouraged the participation of every employee in the functioning of an organization. With that participation, according to the theory, comes enhanced morale, which presumably leads to improvement in both productivity and overall work quality.
