Abstract
Experiments on the effects of lighting at the Hawthorne Division of the Western Electric Company in Chicago in the 1920's led to startling and unexpected results concerning motivation. Researchers found that workers can be motivated by being cared about and appreciated, with a net result of increased productivity. A parallel line of thinking emerged from behaviorist B.F. Skinner, who argued that the most effective way to motivate people is through positive reinforcement of desirable behavior.
